What is ketamine infusion therapy?

Ketamine is an anesthetic drug that’s been used by physicians and veterinarians since 1970. In anesthetic doses, it results in a complete loss of consciousness while preserving certain protective reflexes that naturally protect your body from harm. However, when ketamine is used in small and controlled amounts, it can be a valuable therapy, especially for challenging pain conditions.

Although ketamine stimulates opiate receptors, similar to morphine, its unique chemical structure makes it an essential tool in the treatment of chronic pain and psychiatric disorders. When used in select men and women, it gives their central pain center a chance to “reboot,” leading to a disruption in pain.

In most cases, especially where other treatments have failed, Overlook PAIN + Recovery uses a series of low-dose ketamine infusions to provide significant relief or eliminate chronic pain. Specific types of pain that are considered “neuropathic” are the most responsive to ketamine therapy.

How is ketamine infusion therapy used?

Intravenous (IV) ketamine infusion therapy has proven to be an effective treatment for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Depression
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Lyme disease
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Lichen-sclerosus
  • Psychiatric conditions
  • Small fiber neuropathy
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

Ketamine can often provide dramatic results after only a few treatments. It’s generally well-tolerated, has no long-term side effects, and isn’t highly addictive.

What can I expect from ketamine infusion therapy?

The Overlook PAIN + Recovery team designs individualized treatment protocols based on the nature of your pain and your responsiveness to initial sessions. Infusions are prepared at Overlook PAIN + Recovery to meet your therapeutic needs.

Various medications can be used to make the infusions, including ketamine, lidocaine, and magnesium. These medications are generally mixed with saline in an IV bag and slowly diffused over several hours. Your Overlook PAIN + Recovery provider might recommend a spectrum of treatments over a week or more.

While long-term pain relief following ketamine infusions can’t be predicted, Overlook PAIN + Recovery works to provide long-lasting relief.
