Common Causes of Tension Headaches

How often have you felt a dizzying heaviness in your head? The feeling of discomfort soon aggravates into a severe headache that can go from mild to intense within minutes. This is called a tension headache.

Tension headaches are common among people who’re under a lot of stress. Statistics reveal that about 3 percent of the US population suffers from chronic tension headaches. These instances account for at least 15 days every month!

This is a cause of concern for the entire reason and it’s important that we track down causes of tension headaches. Even though the name “tension headache” seems self-explanatory, there’s more to it than we think. Here are some common causes.

Causes of Tension Headaches

Even though it may seem like work stress or family problems are the only reasons for tension headaches, but the list above indicates otherwise. The cause of your headache could be something as simple as sleeping late or not enough, or not drinking enough water! Focus on the smaller things that could be triggering your headache.

Symptoms

Tension headaches are not the same for everyone. While an individual might feel a dull pain in the head, someone else might feel tenderness around the scalp.

Another symptom of a tension headache is pressure around the forehead or burning sensation behind the eyes. However, if you’re experiencing a splitting headache in one or both sides of the head, it could be a migraine instead. Migraines are much more intense and long-lasting than regular tension headaches, and need to be treated differently as well.

Treatments

Self-Care

Taking a day off from work and sleeping in late can work like a charm. If you’ve been experiencing tension headaches quite frequently, they could most likely be because of constant stresses and lack of rest. All you need then is a good night’s sleep.

Water Intake

Increasing your water intake also helps reduce the frequency of headaches. Your work schedule may be super busy but it’s important that you find time to hydrate yourself. It’s essential for your health and to avoid headaches.
