Blocking Pain Through Spinal Cord Stimulation

The spinal cord does a lot more than merely providing structural support and. It also protects the nerve roots and several of the body’s internal organs.

But most importantly, the spinal cord connects a large part of the peripheral nervous system to the brain, which allows information to reach through sensory neurons and transmit up to the brain.

Injuries to the cord or the nerves at the base of the spine can have radical effects on their body’s motor and sensory capabilities. Moreover, patients may experience severe discomfort and pain.

Though there are several treatments offered for spinal cord injuries including surgeries; in some cases almost of these treatments fail. Here, spinal cord stimulation may be the last resort.

What is Spinal cord stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation is a form of medical treatment in which a device with an ability to deliver low-level electrical signals is implanted to the spinal cord or specific nerves in an attempt to prevent brain signals from receiving the pain signals.

How does it work?

The process of spinal cord stimulation requires surgery involving a minor incision. A needle is placed in the back near the spinal cord which enables a small device to release low-level electrical signals to enter the body. The patient can adjust the power of the signals and easily turn the device on and off.

When the device is turned on, the nerves in the affected area are stimulated using the electric signals, which help in blocking the pain. To be precise, this device does not eliminate the pain, but simply modifies and masks the pain signal from reaching the brain. Some patients report that they feel a pleasurable, itchy sensation, but most patients don’t.

How effective is it?

It’s important to understand that stimulation does not get rid of the source of pain, but simply modifies the signal being transmitted to the brain; therefore, it’s extremely difficult to measure its effectiveness. The amount of pain relief each patient may experience varies from one individual to another.

Consequently, a trail simulation is usually performed by the doctor before the device is actually implanted in the body. Typically, the goal of this treatment is to reduce the pain by 50% to 70%, but even a lesser amount of pain reduction can be invaluable for the patient.

Successful treatment allows patients to resume their regular lives, perform daily activities, and decrease their reliance on painkillers and medicines. The good news is: if unsuccessful, the device can be removed from the body without causing any damage or harm to the nerves or spinal cords.
